Last year was a pivotal year for Network Homes, a housing association for vulnerable and disadvantaged people. Our judges said there was a compelling blend of passion, energy innovation and down to earth practicality to Network’s entry, which saw it realigning its strategy in the wake of budget cuts.
Our judges said the financial wellbeing solutions offered by Dunelm had clearly been pitched perfectly for the home furnishing retailer’s workforce. Almost half of Dunelm’s 10,000 staff had engaged with the financial hub and testimonials proved it was being well received.
Care homes don't get a great press but Brighterkind's submission didn't duck the challenges faced in turning around the workplace culture and resident experience. Judges described the care home provider's challenge as compelling and that it was evident that the approach on a limited budget was paying off across its 70 homes - for workforce and residents alike.

Irwin Mitchell’s employment team has more than 70 lawyers and it aims to become trusted business advisers working in partnership with HR professionals. It handled 1,000 tribunal claims in 2018 across a number of sectors. Our judges were impressed by the firm's many achievements including its focus on supporting junior HR professionals and the recognition of the particular needs of the education sector.
The Civil Service Fast Stream is the government’s flagship graduate programme, which also includes school leavers, attracts around 2,500 individuals to work at the heart of government. Our judges said it was good to see the already-successful Civil Service Fast Stream not rest on its laurels and take decisive action to improve diversity.

KP Snacks has been on an acquisition spree and integrating the new businesses has been a huge challenge for its HR team. Our judges said that HR was pivotal to the seamless transitions and the team is to be congratulated for outstanding work that positions them well for future success.
KPMG’s entry focused on it the work for one of this evening’s other winners, the Civil Service Fast Stream. Our judges were impressed with the overhaul of the programme and the collaborative way KPMG works with its clients.

This online retailer proves that all aspects of people management can have a huge impact on an organisation's culture and help deliver huge benefits to the wider business. A clear and comprehensive HR solution to a well-articulated challenge and meaningful benefits both from a customer and colleague perspective.
The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory used a challenging online game to raise awareness of the agency and help them attract talent it had been losing to its competitors. Six thousand people played the game, a handful of whom hold top score, because they hacked the software – a result DSTL was looking for to reveal applicants skilled enough to dig a little deeper.
Not many employers achieve this but Mitchells and Butlers wins L&D Team of the Year for the second year running! From “All Bar One” to “Vintage Inns” the company runs some of best known restaurant and pub brands. Our judges praised the entry for the impressive results across remote sites, all delivered by such a small team.

GWR’s rolling stock is transforming from the oldest in the UK to the newest and with that comes a raft of change, preparing for next month when 75% of its services change. Our judges described GWR’s strategy as exceptional, tackling so many things at once in a difficult industrial relations environment. “A very strong change programme and a real drive for innovation and cultural influence”.

Reconomy provides outsourced recycling and resource management services. Our judges said it tackles some of society's bigger challenges, providing work for vulnerable groups, meeting the needs of multiple stakeholders, and demonstrating a holistic, organisation-wide approach to responsible business.
Our judges said this was a thorough, top to bottom, end to end overhaul of many processes and procedures - but with a critical reappraisal of the mindset and role of HR’s contribution to the business: all-in-all a sound and solid approach.

The Co-op were shortlisted in three categories tonight and were crowned Apprenticeship Employer of the Year. Well now they take the overall prize for their ambitious programme which radically transform retail jobs into retail careers. This large-scale programme has achieved a significant reduction in staff turnover, high engagement scores and an improved talent pipeline.
